A preview of the song was posted via Twitter on 29 November, 2016, though its name was not specified at the time.
On December 29, 2016, Zedd posted a picture of himself with Cara via social media, asking who was "ready" for them to work together on music.[1]
On February 4, 2017, a commercial was premiered during Saturday Night Live featuring a snippet and the release date of their collaboration, the title of which was confirmed to be "Stay".[2] Zedd also teased the song's cover via Twitter on February 19, 2017, and posted the official artwork the next day.
The song was certified platinum by the RIAA on May 26, 2017.[3]
