People haven't heard it because it was really important for me to make a statement with that song for people that don’t know about my past in classical music and rock music and acoustic instrumentation. I was afraid of putting a song like this on my album before.

–Zedd about the True Colors song[1]

"True Colors" is the sixth song and title track from Zedd's second studio album, True Colors. It features vocals from a non-credited singer (later revealed to be Tim James) and was the last track premiered in the Zedd True Colors Experience event series.

An alternate version of the song featuring minor lyrical and instrumental changes, a shorter length, and American singer Kesha was released on April 29, 2016, as the third single from the album.

Background[]

The event for this song took place in New York City, New York, the day of the album's release. Unlike the event's nine predecessors, there was no scavenger hunt; there were also five opportunities to win, as opposed to just one.[2]

At midnight on May 19, 2015, Zedd performed the song live at the Empire State Building.[3]

Controversy[]

Zedd did not credit the vocalist for True Colors, but there were rumors that the vocalist would be Kesha. These rumors, however, were proven to be false,[1] though he later confirmed the release of an alternate version featuring her. "Done With Love", "Straight Into the Fire", and "Daisy" feature vocals from Julia Michaels, and the singer for "Done With Love" is Jacob Luttrell. There were also rumors that the album would feature vocals from Psy, but those rumors were proven to be false as well.[1]

The true singer of the song is Tim James, as revealed in a tweet the night of the Empire State Building performance[3] and in the liner notes of the physical True Colors album.[4]

Lyrics[]

Stars fall at my feet, keep me grounded as I reach
Higher than I see, is there something there for me?
Pulling back the reins, letting go again
I'm not afraid, I'm not

All my life, one page at a time
I'll show you my, my true colors
No, no, I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Let me show you my, my true colors, it ain't no rainbow

A promise with a lie is broken by design
What we thought we knew has been swallowed by the truth
It's time to light the flame right before it rains
I'm not afraid, I'm not

All my life, one page at a time
I'll show you my, my true colors
No, no, I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Let me show you my, my true colors, it ain't no rainbow

Something tells me I know nothing at all
We've escaped our capture
Yet we have our masters
And somehow it's like I've waited

All my life, one page at a time
I'll show you my, my true colors
No I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Let me show you my, my true colors, it ain't no rainbow

Stars fall at my feet, keep me grounded as I reach
Higher than I see, is there something there for me?
Pulling back the reins, letting go again
I'm not afraid, I'm not

All my life, one page at a time
I'll show you my, my true colors
No, no, I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Let me show you my, my true colors, it ain't a rainbow

A promise with a lie is broken by design
What I thought we knew has been swallowed by the truth
It's time to light the flame, right before it rains
I'm not afraid, I'm not

All my life, one page at a time
I'll show you my, my true colors
No, no, I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Let me show you my, my true colors, it ain't a rainbow

Something tells me I know nothing at all
I've escaped my capture
And I have no master
And somehow it's like I've waited

All my life, one page at a time
I'll show you my, my true colors
No I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Let me show you my, my true colors, it ain't a rainbow

(It ain't a rainbow)
(It ain't a rainbow)
|Oh, oh, oh oh, oh (It ain't a rainbow)

Trivia[]

  • "True Colors" is preceded by and linked to "Done With Love".
  • It is the seventh most popular song on the album, alongside "Done With Love" and "Straight Into the Fire".
  • In late August 2015—following a video clip Zedd posted onto his Twitter[5]—rumors began to spread that the English-Irish boy band One Direction was guilty of plagiarism.[6] Both "True Colors" and their 2015 single "Drag Me Down" feature the line "All my life," and in both songs the line is sung similarly.
